Spinal Surgery
Spinal Surgery Option for Senior Pets
How do I know if my pet needs Spinal Surgery?
Pets referred for spinal problems undergo detailed evaluation and neurological assessment prior to the veterinary surgeon discussing any recommended investigations and treatment options. The outlook and aftercare following any possible surgical procedures are also thoroughly discussed.
Dr. Pedraza will consider this to be an extremely important aspect of their patient and client care. Not every spinal case requires surgery, and Dr. Pedraza will always consider the potential for conservative management of spinal conditions where this is appropriate.

Which are the most common conditions treated?
The most common conditions treated are degenerative disc disease in the neck and thoracolumbar area (back) and injuries caused by trauma, such as spinal fractures and dislocations. The aim of most spinal surgical procedures is either to alleviate pressure in the spinal cord and spinal nerves, or to stabilize affected vertebrae.
What treatment can be done for my pet?
Surgical treatment consists in creating a hole in the vertebrae to remove the part of the IVD that is putting pressure on the spinal cord. Recovery time vary from 1 to 4 weeks. Despite carrying a small risk of causing further trauma, surgery should prevent further deterioration and relapse in the future. Success of surgery depends mainly on how much
spinal cord function has been lost and especially whether or not and for how long the
animal has lost the ability to feel pain in its toes.
